SHI'AN WANG

Hello! My name is Shi'an, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering at the University of Minnesota. Before coming to the U, I completed my Master of Applied Science studies with a scholarship from the University of Ottawa, Canada where I enjoyed three wonderful years. Prior to that, I obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree in People's Republic of China. Generally speaking, I am interested in any subject involving analysis. I am really fascinated by analytical research, and this is the reason why I chose to do graduate studies. I have a background in control systems and transportation engineering. I believe it would be great to work with Professor Levin to apply the ideas in systems science to the control and operation of autonomous vehicles, electric vehicles, among many others. Apart from research, I am really into tennis which I have been playing for nearly seven years. I am also a big fun of exploration into the world. I have traveled to many places all over the globe, such as Beijing, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Zurich, London, Abu Dhabi, etc. Last but not least, I am on the way of learning different languages, including French and Spanish. ​

I am a visiting Ph.D. student in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering at University of Minnesota. I come from Chang’an University in China, and my major is Transportation Planning and Management. My previous research includes traffic safety & efficiency optimization control for intersections, microscopic traffic simulation, speed limit control. Currently, I am working on the project of intersection control for connected automated vehicles (CAVs). In the future, I believe CAVs will reshape the existing transportation system, as the crux of traffic network, updated intersection management for CAVs is of great concern. It’s my great honor to join Prof. Levin’s lab, with my research background I believe it would be great to work with Prof. Levin and hope to explore more new issues and methods for the control and operation of autonomous intersections. In my free time I enjoy drawing pictures, traveling with friends, cooking, and yoga. ​

Hi, my name is Te. I’m a graduate student pursuing my Ph.D. degree in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering at the University of Minnesota. I got my Bachelor’s degree in traffic engineering at Chang'an University and my Master's degree in transportation engineering at Southeast University. I have a great interest in mathematical modeling, traffic simulation, traffic control, and CAVs. I am glad to join Dr. Levin's group. I am a fanatical basketball fan. In my spare time, I like to watch NBA on the spot

Hi, I am Simanta, a Master's student in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering at the University of Minnesota. I got my undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in Bangladesh. I am primarily interested in Traffic Assignment, Autonomous Signal Control and Autonomous Vehicle related research. So, Professor Levin's lab is a perfect fit for me. I like to spend my spare time by programming, gaming or by hanging out with my friends. And I love Python.

I am a Ph.D. student in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering at the University of Minnesota. I got my bachelor’s degree at the University of Science and Technology Beijing, and master’s degree at Beihang University majoring in Transportation Planning and Management. I am always attracted by emerging technologies. It is challenging but exciting to find and deal with problems in applying these technologies in transportation field. My former research focused on sharing mobility and now I am fascinated by connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs). Therefore, sharing autonomous vehicles (SAVs) would be a perfect combination of these two aspects, and I would like to study this topic when pursuing my PhD degree under the supervision of Prof. Levin in the next 4-5 years. In my spare time, I love photographing. It is meaningful to record those important moments and beautiful scenery.

AKSHAY RAMEN

I am a junior studying computer science. My project is to create a simulation in Java mimicking the interactions that would occur in an autonomous electric vehicle dispatch environment. Since there is no driver in the simulation, I am tasked with implementing a shortest path algorithm to minimize wait times for rides and maximize the number of passengers that get rides. Last summer I interned at Smiths Medical where I automated parameter verification tests for a their newest medical device in Python. My free time interest including playing and watching sports, reading, and exploring the city.

ROHIT SHARMA

I am a sophomore studying computer science. My past projects include assembling a robot that uses computer vision to identify a person as male or female using a convolutional neural network and developing/publishing an iOS application called Helium Adventure to the App Store. Currently, I am creating a simulation for the use of autonomous electric vehicles in ridesharing. The simulation ensures that the vehicles pick up and drop passengers at designated destinations in the most efficient way possible using a shortest path algorithm. In my free time, I enjoy playing the guitar, weightlifting, and listening to music.​

MARIA CIENIAWSKI

I am a sophomore pursuing a civil engineering major and a computer science minor.  I am currently creating a simulation of a network of shared autonomous vehicles using a shortest path algorithm.  The simulation models the length of passenger queues to ensure stabilization of the network.  In my free time, I enjoy cooking, practicing yoga, and being outdoors.

The ideal candidate will have one or more of the following skills:
  • Background in Transportation Engineering

  • Prior research experience
Applicants should hold a B.S. or M.S. in Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. ​​
​Graduate students will be fully funded (tuition and stipend) as a Graduate Research or Teaching Assistant.
